ESO – Espaces et Sociétés

ESO – Espaces et Sociétés – is a multi-site research unit. Created at the beginning of 1980s, it houses five laboratories localized at Angers, Nantes, Caen, Le Mans, et Rennes. Also, ESO is located in three regions : Brittany, Pays de la Loire, Basse-normandie.

ESO is currently headed by Vincent GOUËSET, geography professor at the University of Rennes 2, and it's certified as Joint Research Unit (UMR CNRS 6590). The unit consists of 7 CNRS researchers, more than 120 teachers-researchers, 17 members of adminstrative and technical staff and about 110 doctoral students.

ESO is not only a research unit of geography. It has become a multidisciplinary unit localized in the West of France and open to various themes and spaces. If the unit especially consists of geographers and regional planners, it also consists of researchers from other disciplines (sociology, environmental psychology, architecture and urban planning).

The scientific activity of ESO is fully in line with the field of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The scientific project is constructed around four main themes:

  • Thinking and questioning the spatial dimensions of the societies
  • Social and spatial dynamics
  • Space representation, practice of places, territorialities
  • Spaces and territories of governance
